Building a Skincare Routine That Actually Works — A Local Perspective
Ashley Johnson, our esthetician at Innovation Wellness, grew up in San Antonio and trained to address a specific problem: her own skin. Years of struggling with acne pushed her to learn everything she could about how skin actually works — and eventually to help other people with the same concerns. When she moved to the Brownwood area, she started noticing patterns in what her clients were dealing with that were specific to this region.
This article is her perspective on what commonly gets in the way of healthy skin in Central Texas — and what tends to actually help.
What Central Texas Does to Your Skin
The climate here is not forgiving. Heat is obvious — but the specific combination of heat, low humidity during certain seasons, and high UV exposure throughout the year creates conditions that stress the skin barrier in particular ways.
Hard water is a factor that many people overlook entirely. The water in this area is high in mineral content, which affects how cleansers rinse off and can leave a residue that contributes to dullness, congestion, and sensitivity over time.
And then there is the practical reality of busy schedules, outdoor work, and the tendency to either skip skincare entirely when life is hectic or to use whatever is convenient at the grocery store without thinking about whether it is actually suited to the skin or the environment.
The Most Common Issues Ashley Sees
- Dehydration masked as oiliness. Skin that produces excess oil is often doing so because the barrier is compromised and not retaining moisture. Adding more astringent products makes it worse. Proper hydration — the right kind — helps regulate oil production over time.
- Congestion and breakouts from products that are too heavy. In a hot, humid summer, the rich creams that worked fine in winter can clog pores and cause breakouts. Rotating your routine seasonally is worth doing.
- Sun damage that has been accumulating for years. Uneven tone, texture changes, and fine lines that show up in your 30s and 40s are often the result of UV exposure in your teens and 20s. SPF daily — even in winter — is genuinely the single most effective thing you can do for long-term skin health.
- Barrier damage from over-exfoliation. The idea that more exfoliation means clearer skin is common, and it tends to backfire. A compromised skin barrier becomes reactive, red, and prone to breakouts. Less is usually more.
What a Functional Basic Routine Looks Like
You do not need ten products. Most people do better with fewer things they actually use consistently.
- Cleanser. Gentle and suited to your skin type. If your face feels tight after cleansing, the cleanser is too stripping.
- Moisturizer. Used morning and night. Heavier in winter, lighter in summer if you tend to run oily.
- SPF. Every morning, year-round. This one matters more than anything else for long-term skin health.
If you want to add targeted treatments — something for acne, texture, or uneven tone — layer them between cleanser and moisturizer. But start with the basics working before you add anything else.
When Professional Skincare Makes Sense
Over-the-counter products can only do so much. If you are dealing with persistent acne, significant texture changes, redness that does not go away, or skin that is not responding to what you are using at home, a professional assessment is worth more than buying more products.
A facial is not just a cleaning — it is a structured assessment of your skin, professional extractions when needed, targeted treatments using professional-grade products, and recommendations for what to use at home based on what your skin actually needs.
Ashley uses Green Envee products at Innovation Wellness — a professional line that prioritizes skin health over cosmetic coverage. The treatments she offers include customized facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels (the Flora Essence Lactic Peel), Celluma LED therapy as an add-on, and waxing and brow services.
A Note on Acne Specifically
Acne is often treated like a topical problem when it is frequently a systemic one. Hormones, diet, gut health, and stress all show up on the skin. That does not mean topical treatments do not help — they do. But if you are doing everything right with your skincare and still breaking out, it is worth looking at the bigger picture.
Ashley takes a holistic approach to acne because she lived this problem herself. She is not going to sell you a ten-step regimen and send you home. She is going to try to understand what is driving your breakouts and work with you on what will actually make a difference.
